Discussion Questions -- Literature Books

Sign of the Beaver
Look at the illustration on the front cover. What do you particularly notice about the two boys? What is the setting? What do you think the boys are discussing?

Write about a friendship you’ve formed with a person whose background or
culture is very different from yours. What hurdles did you both have to overcome

when you first met? What has finally brought you together as friends?

The Witches

What do you think would be an interesting fate for a child caught in a witch’s spell?

What is a stereotype? What is our stereotype for a witch? (These 2 questions go together.)

Why do you think the author tries to make it sound like witches are real at the beginning of the story? We know they are not, so why does he do this?

Woodsrunner

Turn to page 12 and reread the author, Gary Paulsen's, nonfiction connection to the text. Then answer the questions below.
After reading the nonfiction passage on "communication" what textual evidence (the words written in the passage) can you gather regarding what communication was like during the Revolutionary War? Explain in your own words.
Based on this textual evidence (the passage you are reading) what inferences can you make regarding communication during the war and how it affected or influenced individuals during that time?
Based on this textual evidence, what point of view do you have on what communication was like during this time?

  5. Mr Prola am I supposed to post this here? Garrett

The two boys are different. The one boy is Native American, tanned and he has muscles. The other boy is white and he looks younger. It looks like he lives on a farm. I think boys are discussing about what they might do next or making a plan. Both boys are in the forest.

My friend Ethan is Vietnamese and I am Mexican, Japanese and White. He speaks Vietnamese and English. He goes to vietnamese school on Sundays. I don't speak any other language. When we became friends it was easy for us to communicate because he was born in America and he speaks English just fine. He was in my 4th grade class when we first met and he was new to the school. When we first met, he asked, "do you want to be friends and I said, yes." We don't really hang out too much at school because we have different classes but when we get the chance we have a good time. We both like cars, and we like to play video games.
