The Scientific Method

As an introduction to science this year, we will learn about the scientific method.  Read these two articles about the scientific method.
Biology4Kids -- Scientific Method
Ducksters -- The Scientific Method

Once you have read the two articles, think about these three things:
  1. What are the different steps of the scientific method and how do they work?
  2. Which article does a better job of explaining the scientific method?  Why?
  3. Why is the scientific method important and useful to scientists?

Don't sit around all summer playing video games.  You should make sure that your math skills are sharp and ready for next school year instead.  Create an account at Khan Academy and review all of your 5th grade skills. (Or you could sneak a peek at what you might learn in sixth grade.)  You can use your school account and Clever to sign in to Khan Academy.

American Revolution PBL

How did the major battles, leaders, and events of the American Revolution affect the outcome of the war?

This will be our driving question for this project.  All of your work in this unit should be based on this question.  As a culminating task, you will create a slideshow about this with your Google account.

Your slideshow should include:
  1. A cover slide that includes the driving question.
  2. Five to seven slides with information about the battle, leader or event.
    • What happened?  Why?  (Or who was this person and what did they do?)
    • Who won?  Why?  (Or what did the leader accomplish?)
    • How did this person or event affect the outcome of the war?
    • How did this battle/leader/event change history?
    • How did this person or event change the war?
  3. A bibliography slide with links to resources that you found useful.

Weather Project Introduction -- Weather PBL 2018

How does weather affect the lives of human populations throughout the world?

This is our driving question for this project.  This week you will be creating Google Slideshow presentations on this question.  You will need to pick one climate or weather problem that has an effect on humans.  We will be presenting these slideshows to the class.

Suggestions:
Climate Change
Blizzards
Droughts
Floods
El Nino
Hurricanes
Tornadoes
Thunderstorms

Your Google Slideshow will need to include the following:

1.  A cover slide with your topic and the driving question.

2.  At least 10 slides which explain the following:
  • What causes your weather event?
  • What are the characteristics of this weather event?
  • What kind of damage can be caused by it?
  • How does it affect people?
  • How do humans react and respond to protect themselves?
3.  A final slide with a list of links and resources that you used to gather information.

Check out your project groups here.

Fractional Recipe Assignment

You math assignment over the February break is to find a recipe with at least 3 fractions in it and post it on Kidblog.

  • Type the oringinal recipe on Kidblog.  Include the cooking instructions and how much it makes.
  • You will then need to triple the recipe and type in the new measurements.
  • After that, you need to take the original recipe and cut it in half.  Post the new measurements.

Here is my example that I posted on Kidblog.

Don't forget to include the instructions for the recipe and the amount that the recipe makes.  For extra credit, you can make the recipe and post a picture of yourself making it. (You don't actually need to cook unless you want the extra credit.)  This is a good way to share a favorite family recipe.  Have fun!

Valentine Origami Heart Envelope

Feel free to try out this heart envelope as an extra art project on Valentine's Day.  I also found this short history lesson on Valentine's Day if you are interested.  (Of course I did!)

Water Cycle Diagram

As a project this week, you need to make a diagram of the water cycle.
  1. Include full color pictures to represent evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff.
  2. You should connect each picture with an arrow.
  3. Each picture should also be explained with a caption.
  4. I should be able to understand each stage of the water cycle by reading your captions.
Use these links to help you understand the water cycle better.  You should also go back to your science book and reread the sections about the water cycle.
