Scientists Who Inspire

Who inspires you?  We are reading about a rainforest scientist in language arts class right now.  Can you think of a scientist who is an inspiration to you?  Why do they inspire you?  What did they study?  Why should other people learn about them?

MLK Day -- January 20th

Monday, January 20th is the holiday dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Please learn about this great civil rights leader as you celebrate this holiday.  Read a short biography about him.  Check out this video from Nat Geo Kids about MLK.  Listen to his "I Have A Dream" speech.  If you want more of a challenge, this biography and video have quite a bit about his life.  Finally, here is a fun BrainPOP video about MLK.

Mandela Day -- Nelson Mandela turns 95 today

Who is Nelson Mandela?  Those of you who were in my class this year will remember reading a story about him.  He was a leader in South Africa against apartheid.  He spent a very long time in jail for standing up to an unjust government and a system that did not give equal rights to all people.  He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.  When he was released from jail, he became the president of South Africa.
